With Tuesday’s news that the Big Ten and Pac-12 are postponing football until the spring, one school in the Big Ten is still hoping that they can play college football in some way this fall. That would be the University of Nebraska.
On Tuesday, a joint statement was issued by head coach Scott Frost, Athletic Director Bill Moos, and Chancellor Ronnie Green when the announcement was made about the postponement of football.
“We are very disappointed in the decision by the Big Ten Conference to postpone the fall football season, as we have been and continue to be ready to play,” it reads. “We will continue to consult with medical experts and evaluate the situation as it emerges. We hope it may be possible for our student athletes to have the opportunity to compete.”
Before the postponement announcement, Frost told the media on Monday that the school was ready to play football no matter what.
On Wednesday’s edition of Get Up, ESPN College GameDay analyst and Michigan alum Desmond Howard had a strong take on Nebraska that if they don’t apologize to the conference, then maybe the conference could work on getting them out.
“I have a bitter taste in my mouth about that whole thing. I think it is greatly disrespectful to the new commissioner, Kevin Warren,” the Heisman Trophy winner and Super Bowl MVP said. “You think that they are the only team that really wants to play? Of course not. All the teams and all the coaches want to play, but they are not whining and crying. I think at this point I would demand an apology from the chancellor, president, and Scott Frost or if I am Kevin Warren right now, I am working on a way to get their ass out of the Big Ten.”
Later in the show, Howard was back on with Jalen Rose to talk more about Nebraska, but before that, he told the audience what he tells people when they ask him whether or not there is going to be a college football season.
“When you get on social media or you watch the news and you see protests about not wearing a mask and they don’t want to practice social distancing… I said those people are actively sabotaging our chances of having a college football season because once those numbers keep spiking and we are still breaking records, then you put the commissioners and the presidents in a position that they can’t have a college football season.”
Towards the end of the show, Howard along with Rose gave some advice to the athletes that are disappointed about not having football this fall.
“Use your time wisely. Don’t just invest in your physical health, invest in your mental health too. Read books. Check out something on YouTube and find out how to do different things, things that may interest you that you never had the time to do before but invest in your mental health just as much as you do your physical health.”
While Howard’s words for Nebraska will make more headlines, his advice to young athletes as a former Heisman Trophy winner should not go unnoticed.
My guess is Desmond is still carrying a grudge for being co-champions in 1997 with Nebraska. Where is his outrage with Ohio State’s coach? Probably because Ohio a State owns their ass in football. He needs to shut his mouth and act like an adult.
