The Mightier 1090 Launches August 17

It’s been more than 16 months since San Diego’s The Mighty 1090 went dark and nearly four months since new leadership announced plans to relaunch the station. Now called The Mightier 1090, the iconic Southern California sports radio station will go live Monday, Aug. 17 at 9am PT.

Currently, The Mightier 1090 is on-air playing a loop of highlights from the station’s history as they prepare to go live with their new lineup next week.

“Several months of work from a countless number of people have led us to this week,” said station investor Bill Hagen who signed a five-year lease to relaunch 1090. “We are giving The Mightier 1090am back to the millions of listeners of Southern California that have missed it since it went off the air almost 18 months ago. Launching a radio station from scratch, during a pandemic with no ‘live’ sports has been daunting, to say the least, but we made it! I am very proud of the product we are putting on the air.”

Next week, The Mightier 1090 will debut a brimful lineup, featuring national talent Tony Bruno, Rich Eisen and Scott Ferrall, along with local standout Scott Kaplan who will host weekdays from 3 – 7pm.

For years, Kaplan anchored the weekday lineup on the heritage station, spending time in both mornings and afternoon drive. In the months after The Mighty 1090 went dark last year, Kaplan attempted to get the San Diego sports station back on-air, but was unable to reach a deal with ownership. As 1090 finally makes its way back to serving their SoCal audience, it’s fitting to see Kaplan featured.
