KCRW Offering Staff Buyouts Amidst Budget Shortfall

There’s no question that the coronavirus pandemic has affected many businesses, which has led to many losing their jobs. In the journalism world, it’s no different.

Santa Monica-based NPR affiliate KCRW-FM (89.9) is offering buyouts to its staff members, with 24 accepting thus far.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the names of those who’ve taken the buyouts are DJs Liza Richardson, Mario Cotto, Mathieu Schreyer, and “Morning Becomes Eclectic” producer Mary Chellamy. Also, six members of the programming staff, including producer Frances Anderton have accepted these offers.

We Make KCRW shared a post on their social media accounts addressing the matter.

“KCRW management has come to the table to present voluntary buyout options to staff as a first step to address a budget shortfall.”

KCRW President Jennifer Ferro addressed the departures in an email to her staff praising those that have decided to take the buyout.

“Each one has made an indelible mark here. Some have been here for more than 20 years, and I’m sure the decision to do this was as hard for them as it is for us to say goodbye,” Ferro said.

Most who took the buyout will be leaving KCRW by the end of the week.
