Accusations of racism prompted the departure of St. Louis Public Radio general manager, Tim Eby. His exit was acknowledged in an email sent out to staffers from University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Vice Chancellor of Advancement Paul Herring. The radio station is operated as part of the university. Tom Livingston is now the station’s general manager.
Eby came under fire last month after a letter written by a group that represents St. Louis Public Radio’s reporters and producers of color was released. The letter titled “Racism exists at St. Louis Public Radio Acknowledge it” accused Eby of failing to “transform the station into a diverse, equitable place to work.”
“But instead, he (Eby) chose to uphold white supremacy at the station by remaining complacent with the status quo,” the letter read.
Eby ran St. Louis Public Radio for 11 years. He also worked at Ohio State University and in South Bend, Indiana.
The university has hired a St. Louis-based law firm to investigate equity and inclusion practices at the NPR affiliate. A group representing the 21 employees said they have no confidence in the firm’s ability to investigate the station.
