When you think of quarterbacks who know how to market themselves, Jeff Garcia doesn’t rank anywhere near the top, but Cam Newton and his flamboyant fashion sense does.
After the 49ers crushed the Patriots 33-6 on Sunday, Garcia offered the odd take that Newton shouldn’t dress the way he does because of his on-field struggles.
“You throw three more interceptions, you get yanked in the second half, there’s nothing good going your way. Why are you dressing like that to bring more attention to yourself?” Garcia said during the postgame coverage on NBC Sports San Francisco. “I’d be trying to ask the equipment managers to put me in your jock sock court and sneak me through the back door and I’ll show up on the field and do the best that I can.”
In his weekly spot on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show Monday morning, not only did Newton seem unbothered by Garcia’s criticisms, but he actually agreed with him. Newton did, however, note he won’t alter his wardrobe.
“Who is this? No. 5 Jeff Garcia? Well, you know what’s crazy? I agree with him and the fact that he’s a former player, he has every right to say that and until that happens so be it,” Newton said on WEEI. “That’s another opinionated theory and it’s fair to say. I know I come off to so many different people in different ways and that’s fine. You know what, he’s exactly right. But, I’m not changing the way I dress.”
Newton’s starting job with the Patriots might be in jeopardy and at the age of 32, he may never regain his MVP form. But his personality, philanthropy, popularity and fashion sense should see him stay relevant deep into retirement, unlike Garcia who stumbled on a last gasp of national attention on Sunday.
