Remember HQ Trivia, the app-based trivia game phenomenon that handed out real money to its winners? Well, the concept is being revived by Learfield IMG College and SIDEARM Sports and ESPN’s Mike Golic will be the host. The show is called The Fan Exam and has already landed a major title sponsor in Unilever.
The Fan Exam will start with a six week, 12 episode test run. Players can participate via an app or through one of the 150 school athletic department websites operated by Learfield’s SIDEARM Sports brand.
Golic told Mike McCarthy of Front Office Sports that he was always a fan of HQ Trivia and was drawn to The Fan Exam for its similarities. He explained that unlike HQ, there will be different levels of prizes for Fan Exam players. That should make it possible for players to be rewarded at all levels.
“The beauty about this is you’re never eliminated through all the shows that we’re going to have,” Golic said. “You can win for that week, there’s a cumulative score for the entire year. So even if you miss questions, it doesn’t matter. You still get to answer all twelve [questions]. Your score is logged — and you can win a bunch of different ways. It’s cool. You’re never out of it.”
Mike Golic isn’t just the show’s host. Learfield IMG executive Rick Barakat told McCarthy that he is the reason the company is confident that The Fan Exam will have success.
“We needed a dynamic, engaging, charismatic host. Mike checks all of those boxes,” he said.
