Two-time Cy Young award winner and Minnesota Twins Hall-of-Famer Johan Santana is going to try his hand at broadcasting.
The 41-year-old retired starting pitcher is joining the Twins broadcast booth for two Spring Training games next month according to the club. Santana makes his debut with play-by-play voice Dick Bremer and analyst LaTroy Hawkins on Friday, March 26, then working with just Bremer on March 27. The broadcasts are part of 13 televised Spring Training games on FOX Sports North.
Santana last pitched in a major league game during the 2012 season. Once considered destined for Cooperstown, the four-time All-Star saw the latter half of his career marred by injuries, but not before pitching a no-hitter in his final season with the New York Mets.
Although his debut is only scheduled to last two days, Santana’s Spring Training cameo could be a tryout for more work at FOX Sports North or elsewhere. Despite never being known as having an overly entertaining personality, Santana’s on-field intelligence should translate well to broadcasting.
