Westwood One’s Kastenbaum Awarded for Protest Reporting

Westwood One radio journalist Steve Kastenbaum was awarded by The Deadline Club for his coverage of the New York City protests last year in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

The Deadline Club which serves as New York City’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists said Kastenbaum’s reporting epitomized great journalism.

“Steve Kastenbaum’s reporting on the civil rights protests in New York City over this past summer demonstrated strong, as well as balanced, reporting,” The Deadline Club said. “The ‘day-of’ reporting was comprehensive and superb, but the follow-up reporting on peaceful protesters diffusing tensions with police was equally crucial, painting a fuller picture and therefore rendering the story in all the complexity it entailed.”

The Deadline Club’s journalism competition began in 1957.

Kastenbaum has more than three decades of experience breaking news and crafting long form reports. He was hired at Westwood One nearly seven years to be the New York Bureau Chief and a senior correspondent for the national news network.
