Several Michigan Public Radio stations are forming a council to strengthen its news coverage in the City of Detroit, according to the organization’s website.

Michigan Public Radio, which operates four stations in Ann Arbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, and Port Huron is teaming up with non-profit ARISE Detroit with the goal of hiring a community engagement reporter.

Management said the goal is to cultivate stories across those respective communities and engage the 800,000+ monthly listeners across the state.

“Michigan Radio has a history of award-winning local journalism and audience engagement,” said Executive Director/GM Steve Schram. “This program with the support of ARISE will allow us to deepen that connection through quality and meaningful content addressing the concerns and needs of the people of Detroit.”

The four radio stations operated by Michigan Public Media WUOM Ann Arbor (91.7), WFUM Flint (91.1), WVGR Grand Rapids (104.1) and WRSX Port Huron (91.3).

The Community Reporting Engagement Council is expected to meet for the first time this fall.
