“I think this is a massive issue for the U.S. Women’s gymnastics team that she has decided to quit in the middle of competition,” Travis said. “I have never seen this happen, I don’t think it’s heroic, and I don’t think she should be praised for it.”

Several vital figures came to the defense of Biles, including U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland, who said that she was proud of Biles as a person and an athlete.

Travis criticized Biles’ decision, noting that he felt terrible for her teammates and the alternates who would have stepped up and took her spot.

“If she did not want her spot, she should not have started the competition,” Travis said. “I think quitting during the middle of the competition is the foundational effort level that we expect from all of our Olympic athletes; we want them to give their all.”
