Jerry Remy Steps Away From NESN For Cancer Treatments

Jerry Remy has been in Red Sox’s fans prayers for quite some time. They have seen the former second baseman step away from TV before, and unfortunately it is happening again. He issued a statement on Thursday saying that he will again undergo treatment for lung cancer.

“Before the game, he texted me to go get them today,” Red Sox Manager Alex Cora told ESPN. “I told him we would and that we would be fighting alongside him every day. We all know how much he means to this franchise and this fanbase, and we’ll all be grinding this out with him.”

Jerry Remy has been dealing with lung cancer for more than a decade. He first announced that doctors had found a mass on his lungs in 2009. He took time away from NESN to deal with a relapse in 2017 and told fans that he had a relapse during the 2013 offseason as well. Just two months ago, he was admitted to the hospital for shortness of breath.

The Red Sox have called Remy a member of the family since 1978, when he was acquired from the Angels. He played for the team until 1984. He has been a part of the team’s NESN broadcasts since 1988.
