MSNBC hosts Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow were heavily criticized this past weekend for promoting a now-retracted story published by Rolling Stone about alleged overdoses of ivermectin.
The magazine reported that Oklahoma hospitals were being overwhelmed by patients who overdosed on the drug.
Ivermectin gained national attention when podcaster Joe Rogan revealed that he used the drug to treat COVID-19. Rogan was diagnosed with the virus last week.
The story cited Dr. Jason McElyea who said gunshot victims had to be turned away because of the volume of ivermectin overdose patients flooding Oklahoma hospitals.
“The ERs are so backed up that gunshot victims were having hard times getting to facilities where they can get definitive care and be treated,” McElyea said.
Reid promoted the story during her show on Friday and Rachel Maddow retweeted the story. The story was also shared by New York Daily News, Newsweek, The Guardian, and Insider.
