Richard Deitsch Posts Goodbye To Canadian Sports Radio Audience

Richard Deitsch lost his job at Rogers’s Toronto sports talk station Sportsnet 590 The Fan last week when the company announced layoffs across the country to make way for a national lineup. On Tuesday afternoon, The Athletic media writer took to Twitter to acknowledge that he was indeed out.

“When I arrived in Toronto in March 2018, it was as much about the adventure of trying something new as it was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with the most famous sports host in the country,” Deitsch wrote. “Had I passed on the job, I knew deep down I would regret that decision forever.”

Deitsch came to Canada initially to work with Bob McCown on Prime Time Sports. McCown was let go from the afternoon drive position in 2019. Deitsch described their time together as “a remarkable experience” and thanked McCown and former 590 program director Dave Cadeau for the opportunity.

As for his future, Richard Deitsch says he and his family love Canada and they intend to stay. He will continue writing for The Athletic, but also wants to continue talking about the local teams in Toronto.

“Hopefully, if and when the next chapter in Canada comes, you’ll give that forum a shot as you did when I arrived here from the U.S. 3 1/2 years ago. Thanks for listening,” he concluded.
