Facebook has dealt with plenty of bad publicity in recent years, from its role in the 2016 election to the whistleblower Frances Haugen. As a result, founder Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly mulling over a name change as the company undergoes a rebrand.
Stephen Colbert decided to open “The Late Show,” mocking Facebook for the potential name change. The skit begins with repurposed footage of Zuckerberg delivering a presentation to Facebook employees.
“In recent years, we’ve been criticized for spreading disinformation, promoting hate, and causing body image issues among teenagers,” redubbed Zuckerberg says. “So we’re finally going to make a change: To our name only!”
“What we’ve learned is when it comes to corporate brand names that inspire trust, Facebook finishes right behind Skynet, the Legion of Doom, and Puppy Punching, INC,” redubbed Zuckerberg continued.
The redubbed Zuckerberg adds that the higher-ups within the company have met to discuss a new name in “one of our virtual, metaverse workspaces.” While brainstorming names, a “Facebook employee” stated that perhaps they bring systematic changes instead of looking to rebrand themselves.
Nonetheless, that virtual employee would be disintegrated by Zuckerberg as making those systematic changes aren’t exactly part of their plan.
