One America News and Newsmax are being sued by Voting technology company Smartmatic, per Reuters. The lawsuit states that these two networks need to be held liable for pushing conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
Smartmatic maintains OAN and Newsmax doubled down on the fraudulent claims to win over Trump supporters angered with Fox News’ election coverage.
The company didn’t state the amount of money it’s demanding from Newsmax and OAN, but Smartmatic says that the election conspiracy theories erased $2 billion in value.
Newsmax published a statement over the lawsuit by Smartmatic in a Delaware court.
“While Newsmax has yet to receive or review the Smartmatic filing, Newsmax reported accurately on allegations made by well-known public figures, including the President, his advisors, and members of Congress, as well as reporting on Smartmatic’s claims in its defense,” the Newsmax statement said.
“Smartmatic’s action against Newsmax today is a clear attempt to squelch the rights of a free press.” Meanwhile, an OAN spokesperson did not promptly respond to a request for comment.
