DirecTV Cuts Ties with RT

YouTube recently demonetized Russian-state media channels like RT, meaning they cannot make money off of ad revenue. Now, RT is being dealt another financial blow as DirecTV is cutting ties with the television network.

RT’s contract with the satellite company was expiring later this year, and they were reviewing whether to extend or not. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in them fast-tracking their decision not to renew; a spokesperson told CNN

“In line with our previous agreement with RT America, we are accelerating this year’s contract expiration timeline and will no longer offer their programming effective immediately,” the DirecTV spokesperson said in a statement.

DirecTV has been one of only two major television providers in the US to carry RT, the other company being DISH, so having the channel removed is a significant blow.

A DISH spokesperson declined to comment whether the satellite company plans to take any action against the channel but expressed support for the people of Ukraine and said DISH is “closely monitoring the situation.”

Television providers in other countries have severed ties with RT following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
