Steve Gregory Discusses How “Unsolved” on KFI Was Created

KFI reporter Steve Gregory will be entering his second year as the weekend host of “Unsolved” on iHeartMedia talk KFI Los Angeles (640). True-crime/unsolved mysteries is one of the most popular podcast genres, and listeners wanted more from Gregory.

“I had done a segment on the Gary and Shannon Show, and listeners responded very positively,” Gregory told Los Angeles media reporter Richard Waggoner in a story published in the Los Angeles Daily News.

The show hosted by Gregory tells stories of Los Angeles-area cold cases, was birthed from a segment he did on KFI’s midday program. It also describes challenging cases, where the reporter delivers behind the scenes looks at cases that were difficult to solve.

“[KFI PD] Robin Bertolucci liked it as well, and when I passed her in the hallway, I joked about doing a weekly show. She stopped and thought about it… we talked over the next few weeks… and eventually, it happened.”

“There are more than 10,000 unsolved homicides in Southern California. At first, some of the agencies were reluctant to talk openly about many of the cases; now they contact me regarding cases they want to expose more.”

Due to his already busy schedule at the station, only ten original episodes aired in the first year. The second-year kicks Saturday nights (8-10 pm) on April 2.
