HBO host Bill Maher discussed Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter during the “Real Time” show Saturday. According to Decider, Maher referred to Musk in his monologue and talked about the platform’s takeover in a panel discussion with MSNBC host Ali Vashi and former Alabama Democratic Senator Doug Jones.
“Some people like it, some people don’t. Elon said everybody is worrying about nothing; Twitter is going to remain a place where something you brain farted when you were in high school,” Maher joked.
Maher joked about Musk’s tweet, which said he would purchase Coca-Cola and add the cocaine back into it. “Sure, it’s all fun and games until Hunter Biden gets his head stuck in the vending machine.”
During the panel discussion, Vashi insisted that it’s time Big Tech gets honest about its effect on democracy.
“Russian bots don’t have a First Amendment privilege,” countered Jones.
Maher argued that Twitter failed in its responsibility to allow parties from both sides to have an opportunity to share stories. He said the censoring of the Hunter Biden laptop story was a perfect example of how the platform can influence the outcome of a story.
“This is well within what satire has always been,” Maher said of the Bee’s work. “Flagging shows a complete lack of judgment. You have failed.”
