WBAP Announces Year-Long Celebration for Its 100th Anniversary

WBAP in Dallas announced that it is commemorating a year-long celebration of the radio station reaching its 100th anniversary, per Radio Ink. WBAP went live on the air on May 2, 1922, months into its launch; it became stable for livestock market reports and weekly church services.

Over the years since it went live, WBAP evolved into becoming the first to broadcast a rodeo, air remote broadcasts, and send a war correspondent to Europe in the early days of World War II.

Furthermore, it became the first station with regularly scheduled newscasts, which continues to be carried on today.

“We begin the celebration today and have exciting things planned throughout the year to celebrate,” 820 WBAP Program Director Bruce Collins said. “WBAP has meant so much to the DFW community. It is going to be a fun year.”

“We could have never lasted 100 years without incredible listeners and advertisers who have supported us. We will forever be grateful.”

Presently, the radio station functions as a 50,000-watt, clear-channel station operated by Cumulus Media. WBAP plans to commemorate its centennial celebration with historical audio clips played on the station daily.
