CNN Rethinking How, What Is Reported as Breaking News

CNN is reportedly rethinking how and what is reported as breaking news. According to the New York Post, the network’s new president is not happy with the excessive use of the breaking banner that appears across the screen whenever a big story is reported.

Axios obtained a memo sent out by Chris Licht who said the network is still figuring out how it wants to use the breaking news scroll.

“You’ve already seen far less of the ‘Breaking News’ banner across our programming,” Licht wrote, adding that the network is still tweaking the guidelines but will use the term only when “something BIG is happening.”

Licht joined CBS in 2011 and was named vice president of programming at CBS News. Licht was the executive producer of CBS This Morning starting when the show launched in 2012, and later joined The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2016

Licht was hired as CNN’s President following the resignation of Jeff Zucker who admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with former marketing manager Allison Gollust.

David Zaslav, the CEO of CNN parent Warner Bros. Discovery, said recently during a town hall meeting that CNN needs to be about “truth and facts.”

CNN bureau chief Sam Feist has led a team in creating a new stylebook that provides guidelines for when to flash “Breaking News,” the memo said.
