Nike is jumping into the sports content business and it is doing so with a pretty powerful partner.
The company’s Waffle Iron Entertainment has signed a deal with Apple Original Films to produce content for the big screen and for Apple TV+.
Waffle Iron Entertainment isn’t a new venture for Nike. The brand produced The Day Sports Stood Still last year and the docuseries Promiseland, which focused on Ja Morant.
Apple and Nike have a long history of collaboration. Apple CEO Tim Cooke has served on Nike’s board of directors since 2005 and has allowed the company to produce products in partnership with the tech giant.
Sports content has been a growing focus for Apple TV+. The service recently dropped a documentary series about Magic Johnson. Another is coming soon focusing on the New England Patriots dynasty. There is also a movie starring Brad Pitt and set in the world of F1 in the works.
In the world of live games, Apple TV+ has acquired play-by-play rights for Major League Baseball and is reportedly likely to land NFL Sunday Ticket’s streaming rights.
