HBO late-night host Bill Maher came to the defense of embattled Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, sort of.

The “Real Time” host discussed a recent comment made by Del Rio that caused the Commanders to levy a $100,000 fine against him. Del Rio referred to Jan 6. riots as a “dust up” and compared that incident to the George Floyd riots that took place over the course of several months.

According to Fox News Digital, Maher said head coach Ron Rivera was wrong for condemning Del Rio’s words, “this is the don’t pee on my shoe and tell me it’s raining. What the f— are you talking about?”

“I would like to; if I could talk to Mr. Del Rio, I think I could probably hopefully convince him a little bit that it was more than a dust-up. He also compares it a lot to the 2020 protests that were going on after the George Floyd murder. Okay.”

Maher’s guests, Krystal Ball and James Kerchick both said Del Rio’s fine was excessive but agreed he should have been punished for his comments.

“I think I could also convince him there are really important differences between those two things. And the attack on the Capitol was worse. Nevertheless, he has a right to be wrong. In America, you have the right to be wrong.” Maher added.
