Last week, “Late Show” staffers were arrested for trespassing at the U.S. Capitol. On Monday night, host Stephen Colbert addressed the elephant in the room regarding what had occurred.
Colbert started his monologue by clarifying what happened, summarizing what his crew was doing, where they were, and who they talked to, stressing they had permission to be there.
“After they finished their interviews, they were doing some last-minute puppetry and jokey make-em-ups in a hallway, when Triumph and my folks were approached and detained by the Capitol police — which actually isn’t that surprising,” Colbert said, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“The Capitol police are much more cautious than they were, say, 18 months ago, and for a very good reason. If you don’t know what that reason is, I know what news network you watch.”
Colbert added that he has no issue with the Capitol police, who were doing their job and are much more cautious after the Jan. 6 incident last year.
“The Capitol police were just doing their job, my staff was just doing their job, everyone was very professional, everyone was very calm. My staffers were detained, processed and released. A very unpleasant experience for my staff,” Colbert said.
