NBC’s morning show “Today” could be dealing with some negative publicity after the New York Post reports that it blocked a Macy Gray band member from wearing a “Free Brittney Griner” T-shirt during a live performance.
Griner is currently incarcerated in Russia after Russian officers initially detained her in February after police stated they discovered vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her possession.
Gray’s keyboardist, Billy Wes, stated that the morning show asked him to turn his shirt inside out.
“They made me turn it inside out. They said I couldn’t wear it, so I had to turn it outside out. But y’all know what time it is: free Brittney,” Wes said.
Gray later addressed the situation in an interview with TMZ, expressing the prominent drama over the “Free Brittney Griner” T-shirt “really bummed me out.”
“We wanted to wear them on the show, and they said no because I guess something happened,” Gray said. “I don’t think it’s too political. It’s a human being that’s in a really horrible situation and there’s people that have power to do something about it. That’s what they should do.”
The Post reached out for comment but didn’t include a statement from Today representatives.
