Arrest Made in Murder of WWJ Anchor Jim Matthews

Police have made an arrest in the case of slain WWJ Newsradio anchor Jim Matthews. According to the station’s website, Arthur Williamson, 54, is facing seven felonies related the case, including first-degree murder.

Williamson is a convicted felon who was reportedly known to the family. However, the extent of the relationship is still unclear. Matthews lived in Chesterfield Township, about 34 miles outside of Detroit.

According to reports, Matthews may have invited Williamson into his home early Friday morning. Several hours later, Matthews’ girlfriend fled the residence along with his five-year-old daughter and flagged down a neighbor who called the police.

Once police arrived, they forced their way inside the residence, and that’s when they discovered Matthews and his 10-year-old son, who was beaten and bound inside a closet.

Authorities discovered Williamson in the basement, overdosing on heroin and suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said they administered Narcan to reverse the effects of the overdose.

Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said Williamson was a “welcomed” guest.

“So that means he had the access by way of being intentionally allowed into the home, and not somebody who broke into the home,” he added.

Prosecutors expect more charges as evidence collection evolves.
