Maybe you are excited to hear Bob Costas on the call of the ALDS featuring the Cleveland Guardians and the New York Yankees, but Mike Francesa does not share that feeling. He made his feelings on Costas very clear on the most recent edition of his podcast.
“He thinks every word is golden because he just will not shut up,” The Sports Pope said on his podcast on Monday. “Everything’s a history lesson. We don’t need a history lesson every two seconds! Everybody’s a Yankee fan, they have Yankee history, they understand Yankee history! They know it backwards and forwards! This is not a history class. It’s a baseball game.”
Francesa may be assuming a lot of the audience. Bob Costas is on the national call of the game, not the local broadcast on WFAN. There are plenty watching for whom stories of Yankees past are brand new information.
For Mike Francesa though, the verdict on Costas is simple. “He’s driving everybody crazy.”
It wasn’t all dragging. Francesa offered Costas a compliment, saying everyone knows that he is great at what he does. He also gave some advice as the Yankees get set to welcome the Guardians to the Bronx for a deciding Game 5.
“It’s a Game 5, it’s a dramatic series, it’s a dramatic fifth and deciding game,” Francesa said. “Let it breath, Bob, please. You’ve squeezed this thing for all its life. It’s almost like Bob’s been locked away somewhere just dying to talk, and now you can’t shut him up.”
