Verne Lundquist stepped away from the SEC on CBS back in 2016, and now believes he knows when his time covering The Masters will come to an end as well.
During an appearance on The Press Box podcast, Lundquist told Bryan Curtis that he has an agreement with CBS Sports to allow him to work the next two Masters before calling it quits.
“Sean (McManus, CBS Sports Chairman) and I had a recent talk about my work at Augusta,” the 82-year-old Lundquist said. “I’m good to go for next year. That will be number 39, and he and I have agreed — and this is not announced and I don’t mean to jump the gun here — but in all likelihood, number 40 will likely be my last. Just because it will be time. I think that’s the plan.”
Lundquist added McManus steered him in the direction of leaving the SEC on CBS in 2016, saying “it’s his job to replenish the well”, before calling the chairman “a great senior manager” and “a brilliant man”.
The departure of Lundquist as one of the lead announcers for golf’s biggest event continues talk of it’s broadcasting future. Jim Nantz is stepping away from his role as the lead announcer for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for CBS Sports. He is adamant, however, that he would like to announce The Masters until 2036.
