During First Take yesterday, Stephen A. Smith called out 105.3 The Fan morning hosts Shan and RJ for posing questions to Jerry Jones about the ESPN personality, and not having him as a guest on their show. Today, the Dallas duo pondered why Smith would bring that up on national television.
“That was out of nowhere. Out of nowhere. Which makes me very curious and skeptical,” Shan Shariff said. “Why did Stephen A. do that? Any theories?”
“I don’t have a theory because I doesn’t make any sense,” RJ Choppy said. “That’s the ultimate stray of strays. It’s like he wanted to get that in at some point during the show because he didn’t get enough of it in the day before. He was unprepared for the comment that was made, I guess.”
“My theory is that he wants the radio station — he knows that we’re the home of the Cowboys and Jerry Jones comes on twice a week — my theory is he sat back and thought ‘I can get even more exposure if I call ’em out again, they talk about me’, I think he wants us to bring him up to Jerry Jones as much as possible. Because anytime we bring him up to Jerry Jones, they’re going to play it. That raises his profile. That makes him look more important to Jerry Jones.”
A texter into the show then asked what the pair was scared of and why they don’t just have Smith on their show. They explained they have attempted to book him as a guest, but he has never responded. However, after he initially didn’t answer their call Thursday morning, Smith called back.
The show asked Smith what his point of contention with Cowboys fans is, which he said was their complete lack of humility. They also asked if it was guaranteed to raise the ratings of First Take, would Smith welcome a Cowboys Super Bowl victory?
“No. Let me tell you something right now. My worst nightmare — I will openly confess — is the Cowboys winning a championship,” Smith said. “They’re great for business; I’m not denying that. I believe in me personally. And I believe — without the Cowboys — I’m gonna have ratings.”
Before questioning Smith’s motives, the hosts mentioned they dislike when national talent fail to credit local radio stations for their work while introducing audio clips, with one person in particular catching their ire.
“Colin Cowherd is the king of it. Every week, I regret not punching Colin Cowherd in his little pig nose at the Super Bowl in Houston when that doofus was sitting there — like a weirdo — trying to push past us and elbow through us to try to talk to people,” Shariff said. “He is the snob of snobs in terms of saying ‘Hey, this came from this radio station’. Molly Qerim tries to say it on First Take. I think Dan Patrick does a decent job.”
