Behind the scenes, the political wheels of the 2024 presidential campaign are spinning. Private donors to the Republican party are ready and willing to move on from former President Donald Trump.
On Monday, Atlanta-based talk show host Erick Erickson dropped that bombshell on his audience. Erickson added that he’s been tapped to act as a consultant of sorts for these donors.
Additionally, these donors would like Erickson to develop a strategy to find a candidate worthy enough of receiving the attention and funds needed to make a run for the White House.
“I have not said this before, I was told I can talk about it in generalities,” said Erickson. “I have been asked to talk to a group of prominent Republican donors about 2024. A number of the largest Republican donors believe for the past few years that their money has been wasted.”
Furthermore, Erickson said that donors believe that they may have been persuaded to provide financial support by people who engaged in petty, small-scale swindling.
“They’re looking at what they did in 2016 where every one of the Republican candidates tended to have a donor fund them and that kept the field alive and going for too long and allowed [Donald] Trump to get the lowest percentage ever given to a candidate in a primary to become the major party nominee.”
Erickson said while the unnamed donors were happy with Donald Trump’s policy decisions, they’re concerned about polls showing that Trump would lose to Joe Biden.
“I don’t think the donors need to consolidate behind one guy,” he said. “But they do need to not consolidate behind 20 candidates.”
Erickson said the media’s love affair with the bad Republican candidates is what will dominate the headlines. He predicted the media would prop up former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.
