Marc Bertrand: ‘RedZone Has Gone in the Tank’

Pricing for NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTubeTV was revealed earlier this week, and as was expected, it’s going to cost you more to subscribe than it did on DirecTV.

An option to add NFL RedZone to your package with or without a YouTubeTV subscription is also available. But on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, host Marc Bertrand told the audience they do not need it.

Bertrand said Wednesday on Zolak & Bertrand that when you stay glued to RedZone, you miss out on a good chunk of action across the league.

“Because RedZone has gone in the tank the last few years,” Bertrand said. “Because what RedZone has decided to do, as I explained last season, they’ve taken whatever the national available game is – the game you’re already getting for free in most instances – the one that if you flip over to FOX or CBS – the 4:25 – they’re feeding you that at all times outside of when someone is about to score. You never get a live look-in at those other games when there’s not a team in the red zone.”

“I don’t feel like you can watch the game when you’re watching RedZone,” he added later. “I’ve done that with my kid when the 4 o’clock’s on. But he’s doing some fantasy, and next thing you know you’re popping in on this team, that team, this team’s at the 10, this team’s at the 5. I don’t have any flow of game or who’s winning.”

Co-host Scott Zolak said RedZone serves a specific purpose that clearly doesn’t meet the needs of Bertrand.

“It’s not perfect, but if you want to keep up with a lot of stuff at once, I still think they do a pretty damn good job,” Zolak said.

“I like to watch a game and have them peek in and give me an update,” Bertrand said.

“But then you get even less,” Zolak responded.
