Mike Florio is a stickler for detail. That is a trait left over from his days practicing law. On Sports Radio 610 in Houston on Tuesday, Sean Pendergast wondered if the ProFootballTalk scribe’s need to have all the facts is always necessary.
Payne and Pendergast reacted to a piece on ProFootballTalk.com in which Florio calls out new Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon for telling Cardinals’ team media that he was told in a press conference that he should be fired while he was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
“While there is some online criticism at the perceived lack of blitzing, we cannot find evidence of an exchange that devolved into Gannon acting like a Little League coach dealing with a complaining parent,” Florio wrote.
Pendergast said Florio was taking Gannon too literally. In reality, the only point that the coach was trying to make is that he is used to being publicly criticized and that there is plenty of evidence for him to say that.
“I wish he had an assistant tell him ‘Hey, you’re being a little HOA here,” Pendergast’s partner Seth Payne said. “Dude, you sound like the president of the homeowners’ association and it’s not fun.”
He added that he had a similar problem with Florio’s book Playmakers. A lot of the ins and outs of the league were interesting, but Payne says it got bogged down in Florio’s detailed explanations of rules and regulations.
“You know what Florio is on his website?” Sean Pendergast responded. “He’s Yellowstone. Like 80% of it is a good read.”
Seth Payne laughed saying that Florio would definitely enjoy the show’s discussions of “obscure Wyoming land laws.” Pendergast agreed saying that it is shocking how much time someone with Mike Florio’s profile in the industry devoted to such an insignificant investigation.
“I can’t imagine anything more tedious in this little realm that Florio lives in than Googling quotes from every Gannon press conference from last season to see if any of them match up with an anecdote he is telling for what is honestly, a team pep rally. It’s a pep rally for a uniform unveiling.”
