After news last month regarding NBC Sports showing interest in J.J. Watt about joining its Big Ten studio program, additional broadcast entities are making efforts to sign the former defensive end to a contract. Watt is weighing offers to contribute to NFL coverage, albeit on a part-time basis, and CBS is currently considered the frontrunner.
If Watt agrees to join CBS Sports, he would be expected to have a role on the pregame show for Super Bowl LVIII and make additional appearances throughout the regular season. Yet he would merely be an addition to the network’s robust football coverage – which includes former stars Tony Romo, Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason among others. NFL Network is also reportedly interested in Watt, according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post.
Watt is widely regarded as one of the top NFL television free agents of the offseason, a class that included Devin McCourty (NBC Sports), Peter Schrager (NFL Network/FOX Sports) and Marcus Spears (ESPN). Mina Kimes reportedly remains unsigned by the network, but ESPN hopes to keep her on its football coverage.
Watt played 12 seasons in the National Football League as a defensive end for the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals. He is the Texans’ record-holder for forced fumbles, recovered fumbles and sacks and was selected to the Pro Bowl five times throughout his career.
