Barstool has done a golf broadcast before, but this weekend, the company will be carrying professional golf for the first time. The website will be the exclusive home of the Korn Ferry Tour’s NV5 Invitational Presented by First Midwest Bank.
Sam Bozoian, better known to Stoolies as “Riggs,” was a guest on Front Office Sports Today this week. He told David Rumsey that while Barstool intends tp put its stamp on the presentation, the focus will very much be on golf.
“At the end of the day, it’s like if we don’t broadcast the golf and show the integrity of the golf, then we fail,” the host of Barstool’s Fore Play podcast said. “So that’s kind of our main goal is to just let the Korn Ferry tour kind of speak for itself.”
The Korn Ferry Tour is a step below the PGA in the American professional golf hierarchy. Bozoian says that means the competition will come with plenty of golfers with stories that deserve to be highlighted.
“If they play well one week, it could literally change their lives in terms of playing on the PGA Tour or not playing on the PGA Tour. If they play poorly for a stretch or this season or these next couple of months, they could be caddying or they could be picking up a server job to try to pay the bills all winter.”
He added that there will still be some elements people expect from a Barstool event. The NV5 Invitational will not be without fun, but the company has a unique opportunity and wants to take advantage of it.
“It’s kind of about the golf really,” Riggs said. “I think if we try to make it about us or whatever, that would be a huge mess.”
