Southern California Public Radio CEO Herb Scannell Announces Retirement

The CEO of Southern California Public Radio, Herb Scannell, has decided to retire. Following the announcement on Tuesday, Board members plan to start searching for Scannell’s successor quickly.

In an interview, Scannell stated that he would remain in his position until the board completes the search for his successor and ensures a smooth transition.

As for why he’s retiring, Scannell notes that after the deaths of his brother and his best friend. Furthermore, he has worked far away from his wife and daughter, who live in New York.

“It’s really a matter of wanting to have another chapter of life where you’re with the ones you love and doing things that you’ve always wanted to do,” Scannell said. “I’m so proud of the work that was done here. We were providing useful information every day, and people started to really look to us for whatever they could to try to figure out how they could mitigate their lives.”

Southern California Public Radio will conduct internal and external searches, including nationwide, for a new chair of the board. The process is expected to take several months, and a successor will likely be identified in the coming year.

“I hope we can do this quickly, but as thoughtfully as possible,” Drew Murphy, who chairs the board of Southern California Public Radio, said. 

Southern California Public Radio is known for being the headquarters of news/talk station KPCC Los Angeles and the renowned podcast company LAist Studios.
