Brandon Tierney didn’t join WFAN until recently, but his run could have started much earlier than it did.
Talking to co-host Sal Licata on their show Tuesday, Tierney spoke about having a meeting with Mike Francesa and Mark Chernoff to potentially replace Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who left the station in 2008 for SiriusXM.
Former Mike & The Mad Dog producer Eddie Erickson was the one who convinced Francesa and Chernoff to talk to Licata, who at the time was still under contract with ESPN New York.
But Brandon told a funny story from that meeting in Queens about Francesa, who jokingly busted Tierney’s chops from the get-go.
“(Mike) goes, ‘Let me ask you a question,'” Tierney said. “He goes, ‘I think you’re good. I really do. I think you’re good. But for somebody who’s good, how come you get no ratings?’ This is how it starts.”
“In that moment, I was more professionally confused,” he added.
Even though he ultimately didn’t end up at WFAN until last year, Brandon Tierney said he has nothing but love for Mike Francesa.
“I got profound respect for Mike, and at the end of the day when me and Tiki started here he sent me and Teek a very nice hand-written note. Mike and I are good,” he said.
