Lester Holt: Coverage From Israel Will Be ‘Long TV Deployment’

NBC News’ Lester Holt is on the field covering the Israel-Hamas conflict. Holt flew first to London, then Amman, with the journey taking hours, and it’s unclear when it will end. Nonetheless, Holt believes he will be in the field for a while.

“I think this will be a long TV deployment,” Holt told Variety via a telephone interview. The “NBC Nightly News” anchor will deliver the program from Israel this week.

Holt isn’t alone in Israel as NBC News has Richard Engel, the network’s foreign correspondent, also at work, as are crews devoted to logistics, technology, and more.

“It’s hard to know what direction this thing will take,” Holt added. “It could become a full military invasion, which has a lot of international consequences. It could just be a regional conflict.”

Also, it’s not the first time Holt has covered a conflict in Israel. He covered similar events in 2006, helping chronicle Hezbollah’s efforts against Israel, but from Lebanon.

“We saw the rockets being launched into Israel,” Holt said. “We didn’t see kidnapping, nothing on the scale of what we have seen here. It’s a really big difference.”
