AM/FM Radio Continues Popularity in Latest Edison Research Share of Ear Study

Edison Research has recently shared a preview of the latest findings from its ongoing Share of Ear study. The report provides insights into the audio consumption habits of Americans aged 13 and above during the third quarter of 2023. The report highlights that traditional over-the-air (OTA) radio maintains a strong presence while streaming audio continues to grow in popularity.

AM/FM radio continues to be a popular choice for daily audio consumption, making up 37% of the total share. This includes both traditional over-the-air and online streaming. In addition, podcasts have reached a new milestone by constituting 11% of all daily audio consumption for this demographic. Similarly, streaming music has also seen an uptick, securing a 19% share of daily audio consumption.

On the other hand, music that we own, such as CDs and digital files, has experienced a decline and now accounts for only 5% of the time we spend listening to audio on a daily basis. Other categories of audio content, such as SiriusXM, YouTube for music and videos, and audiobooks, make up the rest of the share, with percentages ranging from 3% to 14% of daily audio consumption.
