Laura Coates has a show at SiriusXM, and after being a contributor for CNN, she transitioned to hosting a program as part of the network’s nightly news shakeup this past August.
However, landing these high-profile positions in the news media wasn’t exactly the plan for Coates. She was in an entirely different field before being involved in journalism, working previously as a prosecutor and lawyer.
“It was never on my personal bingo card that I would do this work that I was planning to go into journalism,” Coates told Mediate in an in-depth interview with the outlet.
Nonetheless, Coates mentioned what exactly lured her to journalism as she eventually found herself hosting a show on SiriusXM and being part of the nightly programming at CNN.
“Really, it sparked because as a prosecutor and as a lawyer, fundamentally what was so appealing to me and what I feel was really my calling was the storytelling aspect, being able to be the person who can tell another person’s story and then champion them in that way to give them a voice, to have them feel as though they were a full and active participant in their lives and the world around them,” Coates added.
