Christopher McDonald, best known for his role as Shooter McGavin in Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore was a guest this morning on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland’s The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima.
McDonald was promoting an appearance in an upcoming charity golf tournament in the Cleveland area. He was asked if playing the role of Happy Gilmore’s villain was his favorite and he said, “I’ve had some favorite roles and I have to say that it is top 3.”
Then, somewhat out of nowhere, he adds, “And here’s a quick intel. I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago and he says, ‘McDonald you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ and he says, ‘How bout that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. I guess maybe you should cut that out…I don’t want to be a liar, but he did show me that and I thought, ‘Wow that would be awesome!’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, damnit.”
Sandler has not done many sequels, but he has mentioned bringing Happy Gilmore back a few times in the past. Sandler said to Variety in 2022, “Wouldn’t that be fun to do the senior tour of Happy Gilmore, and hang out with all those guys and try to write a great script about Happy as an older guy, and having to calm down his temper and all that stuff? But I never know. Maybe one day, something like that.”
For his part, McDonald has also talked about this before, but was mostly just throwing out ideas. In a CNN interview back in 2021, he came up with the premise of both Shooter McGavin and Happy Gilmore being selected for a Ryder Cup team as a direction a sequel could go. Others have mentioned, especially with McDonald near 70 and Sandler near 60, it could be based around the two playing in the PGA’s Senior Tour.
Regardless of the plot, a Happy Gilmore 2 seems like an incredible idea.
