The podcast app Overcast has unveiled a new redesign that purports to offer faster performance, greater reliability, and more accessibility for programs on the platform.
In a post on Marco Arment’s website — who programs the app — announcing the changes, it revealed the code for the app “was 10 years old, which made it cumbersome or impossible to easily move with the times, adopt new iOS functionality, or add new features, especially as one person.”
Arment revealed 18 months went into “rebuilding most of the app with modern languages and frameworks, and I’m thrilled to finally share it with you.”
While the new app retains popular features users have grown to know and love, it also provides new uses. For instance, the playback position is now adjustable from a user’s home screen. Additionally, users can now alter their playback should they fast forward or rewind too far. A small button will appear asking if the listener would like to undo their seek, returning them to where they previously were in any given podcast episode.
Other features include a voice boost to better hear podcast speakers and a smart speed option.
Despite the updated app, Overcast isn’t done updating yet. “Despite the updated app, Overcast isn’t done updating yet.
“In the near future, I’ll be adding smarter options and more control over selective downloading of episodes to further improve the experience for people who don’t automatically download every episode,” Arment added.
