The 2024 Paris Olympics has proven to be a big draw for wide swaths of television viewing audiences. NBC Nightly News is reaping the benefits of that, as it topped ABC World News Tonight during the first week of the event.
For the week of Monday, July 29th, the evening news program hosted by Lester Holt — who began anchoring the program from the French capital on Friday, July 26th — won the ratings battle for the week. The broadcasts saw their largest average audience from the adults 25-54 demographic since February 2022 and it’s biggest total audience since January 2023.
For the Monday through Friday broadcasts, the program averaged 7.66 million viewers in total. Meanwhile, ABC World News Tonight — anchored by David Muir — averaged 7.46 million viewers. CBS Evening News — anchored by Norah O’Donnell, who announced her upcoming exit from the program last week — saw an average of 4.47 million total viewers.
In the Adults 25-54 demo, NBC Nightly News topped that battle with 1.45 million. ABC’s evening newscast averaged 965,000, while CBS lagged behind with 595,000 in the demo.
