MSNBC saw 4.6 million viewers for the first evening of coverage. That figure represented the highest first night of the Democratic National Convention in network history.

The 2024 convention saw a slight uptick in viewers compared to the 2020 edition. That year, 19.7 million watched the opening night. Both years were down significantly compared to 2016, when 25.9 million tuned in across each network.

Night one of the Democratic Convention outrated the first night of the Republican National Convention held in July, as 18.1 million tuned into that party’s opening night from Milwaukee, according to Nielsen.
