SuperTalk 99.7 WTN has announced that former WTOP morning news anchor Joan Jones is joining Nashville’s Morning News alongside Dan Mandis.
Jones departed WTOP in 2022 as part of a voluntary buyout from the Washington D.C. all-news station.
“Retirement was fun. But radio is funnier!” Jones said in a post to social media announcing the move. “I’ve decided to join the amazing crew at SuperTalk 99.7 WTN in Nashville. I’ll be doing news in the morning alongside the great Dan Mandis. Here we go again!”
On Nashville’s Morning News Friday, Mandis announced the longtime morning news anchor Ken Weaver is moving to afternoons to anchor the station’s newscasts during the midday shows hosted by Chris Hand and Matt Murphy, as well as afternoons during The Drive with Brian Wilson.
“I gotta tell you, as a guy who had the honor of hiring you and working with you all these many years, I’m happy for you,” Mandis told Weaver. “I’m sad for the show because — I gotta tell you — you’re just a highlight to come in every morning and ‘Brother Dan,’ like we do every single day. But I’m also happy for you because this is a lifestyle change.”
Weaver said he had been “waking up at stupid o’clock for 22 years.” He added that his wife works remotely for a company based on the West Coast, so she was ending her work day when he was getting up to go to work, so the change in daypart will be a positive one for both him and his family.
Mandis concluded by stating he was “so incredibly blessed” to have worked with Weaver while sharing similar sentiments that a news anchor of Joan Jones’ caliber was available.
“When you sent me the resume a long time ago, you were listening to the station. We all sounded like a bunch of knuckleheads, and you must have thought ‘I’ll fit right in,'” Mandis said to Jones with a chuckle.
Joan Jones joins Mandis and Nashville’s Morning News co-host John E. Bozeman from 6-9 AM on the Cumulus Media Nashville news/talk station.
