Eli Manning: When Bill Belichick Speaks Football, You Listen Because You’re Going to Learn Something

"I look forward to this and getting to improve more with him and get the good flow, so we can ask him great questions to get him talking about how he would game plan for the teams on Monday Night Football."

Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was a guest of Unsportsmanlike on ESPN Radio. Manning talked about a wide variety of football topics with hosts Evan Cohen and Michelle Smallmon. Chris Canty had to leave the show early to attend an event and was not able to be on with his former teammate.

Manning of course co-hosts the ManningCast with his brother Eli during Monday Night Football games. This year, they have added a regular part with Bill Belichick who is scheduled to join the Manning’s early in each game with his first appearance already under his belt.

Smallmon said, “Eli, I want you to give us another scouting report on a teammate you recently had in Bill Belichick. It’s been very interesting for us to see Bill Belichick step into our realm in the media, but what was it like working with him?”

“It’s been great working with Coach Belichick,” Manning said. “When he speaks about football, you listen because you’re going to learn something. And that’s what I’ve learned, when he’s talking, I always want to get my pen and paper out, take some notes on what he’s saying, or do a deep dive and ask more questions.

“He’s been around the game of football so much. He has a great mind on strategy, on trying to take away your best players. And I look forward to this and getting to improve more with him and get the good flow, so we can ask him great questions to get him talking about how he would game plan for the teams on Monday Night Football.”

Cohen and Smallmon weren’t going to let Manning get away with not talking about their other teammate in Chris Canty. After discussing what the fine should be for him leaving early and not being on with Manning as the guest, the hosts tried to get some scoop on their guy, but Manning played it straight.

When asked about Canty, Manning said, “Well, first I knew him as an opponent. He played for the Dallas Cowboys. He’s a great defensive tackle. And I hated going against him. I know my offensive line always hated going against him. They’re like, ‘this guy’s a beast’. He’s hard to deal with, he’s big, he’s fast, and he has the high motor. So, was very excited when all of a sudden, he’s a teammate. I know my offensive line was excited…He was a guy that had a great attitude, big smile, great work ethic. Brought the teams together, offense and defense. And so, just a great leader and competitor and a big part of us winning a championship.”
