Dan Patrick: I’m Waiting for Sports Insiders to ‘Get Gobbled Up By’ Gambling Outlets

"That, to me, seems like the next frontier."

The sports media world was shocked by the news that ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski was leaving the network. Dan Patrick wasn’t, and he believes there will be an eventual exodus of those sports media figures.

After Wojnarowski’s announcement, Patrick thought the NBA Insider was likely to have been scooped up by a sports betting outlet rather than by the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team.

“I’m waiting for these insiders to get gobbled up by a gambling site where, all of a sudden, you’re paying for information,” said Patrick. “Now it’s going to change because of who’s giving you the information, knowing where that information is going. (Adam Schefter) is working on (NFL) Countdown, so it’s different. And I think these gambling sites are probably looking to get that extra advantage.

“If I can find out five minutes before you do, now I can change the line,” posited Patrick. “That, to me, seems like the next frontier. And this is what the NFL is really trying to be very cautious of. They have to be. If you don’t know that Christian McCaffrey is going to play, and then somebody knows he’s not going to play, that could change the point spread. That could change a lot of things there.”

The Dan Patrick Show host added that he was happy Adrian Wojnarowski made the decision that he did.

“I say this a lot because it took me until I was 50 to understand quality of life, but you kind of have to go through it yourself,” he concluded. “Maybe Woj was just like ‘I don’t want to be tied to this phone all the time. I don’t want to have to hurry up and break the news. I mean, it’s all I know.'”
