Ken Carman: Despite What Public Thinks, Ratings on 92.3 The Fan Are Better When the Cleveland Browns Are Good

"The numbers aren’t good when the team is lousy and people give up on them."

There is a belief that sports radio hosts and stations are happier when their teams are losing more than winning. But 92.3 The Fan morning host Ken Carman is ready to put that notion to bed after yesterday’s performance by the Cleveland Browns.

During The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima on Monday, the Cleveland host shared that — from his perspective — it is patently false to say that his show performs better when the NFL franchise doesn’t play well.

“Somebody sent me a thing, ‘Well you love this. Your ratings are better. Your pockets are lined.’ Somebody sent me that tweet,” Carman said. “I go, ‘Buddy, I can tell you, 13 years of experience on this station, since day one, I can tell you — hand in a court of law, get any judge you want and I’ll say it in a court of law — our numbers are better when the team is good.’

“2016, 2017, the numbers were as bad as they can get. I’m not allowed to talk about these things — I can’t speak for every radio show host that’s ever hosted in this city, but I will tell you for this show, at least for us, the numbers aren’t good when the team is lousy and people give up on them,” Carman continued. “They’re not. So I don’t like talking about this from a personal standpoint, certainly not from a professional standpoint.”

Carman stated his belief that the Cleveland Browns might win seven or eight games in 2024, which does not lead him to believe it will be a banner year for ratings in the Ohio city. “Hopefully we find things to have fun with over the next 14 weeks,” Carman said. “Because they’re not that great.”
