This week marked the start of a new league year for the National Football League, where legal tampering led directly into the beginning of free agency. As a result, NFL fans eagerly flocked to ESPN and Insider Adam Schefter for minute-by-minute coverage of roster movement. The company announced Friday that more than two million fans tuned in at some point on Monday or Tuesday for either a free agency countdown show or NFL Live, all leading up to the official start of the new year on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, on Monday, a major worldwide issue impacted the popular social media platform X, which has become the go-to proving ground for breaking sports news. Despite the disruption, ESPN, led by NFL insider Adam Schefter, experienced a record-breaking day on social media.
In fact, ESPN reported that Schefter’s social media engagements on Monday were the highest he has ever received in a single day during his more than fifteen years of publishing content on social media.
As outages on X continued to cause disruptions, the network quickly pivoted to increased cross-promotion of its ESPN app notifications. During live television broadcasts, Schefter delivered real-time updates on signings and trades, reinforcing the app’s role as a reliable news source. However, since X has been Schefter’s primary social platform for over a decade, many ESPN and Schefter followers initially found themselves left in the dark regarding the latest breaking news on their favorite teams.
Because of these added efforts in promoting notifications, combined with the X outages, ESPN saw a significant boost in its subscriber base. Over the last two months, ESPN increased its notification subscribers by more than 1.4 million. Additionally, ESPN app usage surged by 29% compared to the same day last year, while ESPN.com experienced an 11% increase in web traffic based on unique users year over year.
To acknowledge the success, ESPN released a post on X on Friday, thanking Schefter and the entire roster of ESPN NFL Insiders and staff for their dedication during what proved to be a record-breaking couple of days for the network.
