Steve Bertrand joined WGN Radio in 1985 and is still going strong at the Chicago news/talk station. He celebrated his 40th anniversary with the station this week.
Growing up south of Chicago, Bertrand listened to the station before becoming an intern in college. He later joined the station in 1985 before shifting the becoming a news anchor in 1992. He still holds that role today.
“Growing up in a small town, I always had my eye on moving to the big city. Never during those years of daydreaming would I have imagined the career I’ve had at WGN Radio. I have worked with, and still do work with, some of the best in radio,” said Steve Bertrand. “I’m so grateful. And lucky. Back in the day, many people might have considered my fantasy a pipe dream. But, it turns out, dreams can come true.”
In addition to his tenure as a news anchor at WGN, Steve Bertrand also spent six years as the pre-game and postgame host for the Chicago Bears radio broadcasts when the station served as the flagship home of the NFL franchise. He also produced the broadcasts in addition to his hosting duties.
He also hosted several programs during his tenure, including the Business Lunch hour, the afternoon news, and also hosted a Saturday morning program at one point. The station adds that he has served as a news anchor in virtually ever daypart since joining the station 40 years ago.
“Steve has shared his entire broadcasting career with the WGN Radio audience and built respect, trust, and friendships along the way. It’s a special relationship and four decades deserves recognition,” said WGN Radio Vice President and General Manager Mary Sandberg Boyle.
Last year, Bertrand revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, but shared that the progression of the disease has been “remarkably slow” thus far.
