Disney Investor Backs Off Push For ESPN Sale

0

Daniel Loeb, who has been described as an “activist investor”, is walking back his stance that The Walt Disney Company should sell ESPN.

During a Twitter thread Sunday, Loeb said he now “has a better understanding of ESPN’s potential as a standalone business and another vertical for Disney to reach a global audience to generate ad and subscriber revenues”.

During an interview last week, Disney CEO Bob Chapek told Variety no less than 100 entities expressed an interest in exploring a purchase of ESPN, before saying the network isn’t for sale. He also said Disney has “a plan for it that will restore ESPN to its growth trajectory. When the rest of the world knows what our plans are, they will be as confident about that proposition as we are.”

In August, Loeb called for Disney to spin off ESPN as the network would then have “greater flexibility to pursue business initiatives that may be more difficult as part of Disney, such as sports betting” noting the parent company’s more “family friendly” image as a hinderance to ESPN.

Allen Power will succeed David Santrella as Salem Media Group’s new President of Broadcast Media in 2023. Santrella was promoted to CEO earlier this year.

“My years with Salem have been the most rewarding of my career so far,” Power said. “Our dual focus on doing well while doing good provides a culture unique in media. I’m grateful for the leadership of our founders Edward Atsinger and Stuart Epperson, and grateful to Dave Santrella and (CEO) David Evans for the opportunity to play this role as our company continues to grow as a multimedia platform.”

Clear Channel Founder Lowry Mays Dies

0

Clear Channel founder Lowry Mays has died at the age of 87.

Mays, who launched his radio company as San Antonio Broadcasting Company before renaming it Clear Channel Communications after purchasing WOAI in San Antonio, died Monday.

Mays grew the company to be the nation’s largest radio broadcaster, taking advantage of new legislation put in place under the Telecom Act of 1996. Now branded as iHeartMedia, Mays oversaw the company’s purchase of more than 1,200 radio stations, 750,000 billboards, 41 television stations, and event company Live Nation.

After entering both the Texas Business Hall of Fame and the Radio Hall of Fame, Mays stepped away from day-to-day operations of the company after suffering a stroke in 2005.

A graduate of Texas A&M University, the school re-named its business school in his honor in 1996.

Colin Cowherd, Jim Rome, Joy Taylor, Don Martin, Sam Pines and Amanda Brown to Speak at the 2023 BSM Summit

0

I announced last week that the 2023 BSM Summit will be returning to Los Angeles. We had a fantastic experience in LA in 2019, and I expect our next conference on March 21-22, 2023 to be even bigger and better. But to do that, we need the right people on stage, and I’m excited today to reveal the first six additions to the show.

The 2023 BSM Summit in Los Angeles is proud to welcome FOX Sports Radio and FOX Sports 1 host Colin Cowherd, FOX Sports 1 co-host of the new weekday program SPEAK, Joy Taylor, CBS Sports Radio and CBS Sports Network superstar Jim Rome, FOX Sports Radio and iHeart Sports SVP of Programming, Don Martin, and the brain trust of ESPN LA 710, Senior Vice President Sam Pines and program director Amanda Brown.

All six of these media professionals have enjoyed success throughout their careers. They bring different perspectives, styles, and experiences to the room, and I’m sure those in attendance at The Founders Club at the Galen Center at USC will enjoy and appreciate learning from them.

We will have more announcements in the future about additional speakers to the 2023 BSM Summit. A reminder that if you work in the media industry and would like to attend the conference, you can purchase tickets and secure your hotel room by visiting BSMSummit.com.

I’d also like to thank last year’s sponsors who have already confirmed participation in our 2023 event. The Summit isn’t possible without their support. For folks interested in sponsorship details for the conference, please email Stephanie at Sales@BarrettSportsMedia.com.

Chris Myers: There’s Nothing Like the “Rush” of an NFL Game

0

Chris Myers is in his 15th season as a full-time play-by-play broadcaster with FOX and he has seen his share of large sports moments with the network, but one sport outshines them all.

Myers spoke to Awful Announcing and talked about his time with FOX in which he has called or hosted events including the the Daytona 500, sidelining BCS bowl games and the National Championship and interviewing players moments before the Super Bowl.

“I have a corny saying when I started in broadcasting,” Myers began, “I’d always say ‘Every night’s the Super Bowl.’ They’d always teach me about that.”

Myers told the story of the one time the Super Bowl stage caused him to freeze on camera, in 2005 before Super Bowl XXXIX between the Patriots and Eagles.

“So I’m interviewing Troy Brown live right before kickoff, ” Myers said, “and (FOX Producer Richard) Zyontz said ‘Hey, just be quick and be brief and get a comment from him,’ and as they’re counting down, I tell Troy Brown ‘Hey, I know you’ve got a game to play,’ and I could feel his energy, he was a key player for the Patriots. And I say ‘No need to be nervous, I’m just going to ask you a couple of questions real quick, even though there are millions watching.’”

“And I’m telling him ‘This is the most-watched event,’ and as I’m telling him, I’m starting to get nervous. And they threw down to me, ‘Okay, Chris, go,’ and I froze, and they’re in my ear like ‘Chris! Chris!’ And Troy Brown had to like, smack me with his shoe to be like ‘Chris, let’s go!’ And then I went like, ‘Oh, yeah, hey, this is a big game!’ I don’t even remember what I asked him.”

That moment and countless others in Myers career are what he recalls when thinking about the most exciting events he’s been a part of in his career.

“The rush of an NFL game, I’ve got to tell you,” Myers said, “I’ve always loved events and interviewing athletes and coaches and people in and around sports, but there’s really nothing like the NFL. I guess it’s my first love, growing up around football and the NFL. The rush of calling a NFL game, I felt this even before it became America’s most popular sport, there’s really nothing like it. You prepare, but there’s such unpredictability and such star power. And the size of the audience, and the fan reaction, to me, that’s one of the great things.”

Fox Sports: Alabama/Texas Most Streamed Game in History

0

Alabama defeated Texas 20-19 Saturday in what ended as one of college football’s best games of the weekend. It was also a big winner for Fox Sports as the contest was the most streamed game in the network’s history.

The contest wasn’t the most streamed college football game in the network’s history, it was the most streamed football game ever, including the NFL.

https://twitter.com/FOXSportsPR/status/1568943969114939393?s=20&t=JCEKHhbfHx0eM5SxBMtDAA

Streaming content has long been a source of contention for those in college sports. In recent Big Ten media rights negotiations, the conference tried to avoid putting games on streaming-only platforms, before ultimately inking a deal with Fox, NBC, and CBS that will see a portion of the package exclusively on NBC-owned Peacock.

Fox Sports didn’t reveal the streaming viewership totals for the game.

John Avlon: Cover BYU Racial Slur Story With Same ‘Intensity’ of Allegations

0

CNN anchor John Avlon is calling for other media members to cover a story from Brigham Young University with the same “intensity” after allegations that fans hurled racial slurs at Duke volleyball players no evidence has been found to backup the claims.

During a segment Avlon called “Upon Further Review”, he noted the story leapt to the “outrage Olympics” after Rachel Richardson, a volleyball player at Duke, said she and other black athletes were the attacked with racial epithets during a match last month. Avlon pointed out his own network, CNN, was a purveyor of the unsubstantiated story.

“Fidelity to the facts is all that we as journalists and citizens should ask,” said Avlon. “It’s understandable that there’s a desire to believe people when they say they’ve been victimized, but the accusations have to be backed up by facts and when the facts don’t fit upon further review, we need to set the record straight with as much intensity as the initial reports.”

He also added the Richardson family has stopped responding to requests for comment from CNN, while noting the statement from BYU doesn’t label her as a liar or fabricator.

“Healthy skepticism is always a virtue, but this doesn’t read like a coverup,” Avlon said. “Instead, it feels like there was a rush to judgment because of a well-intentioned impulse to believe the Duke player’s accusations.”
