BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Sports Radio Stations of 2019

1

Last night, the NFL crowned the Kansas City Chiefs as their Super Bowl champion. Today, we do the same for the sports radio format by recognizing the best sports radio stations for 2019.

Before scrolling ahead to see who made the list, remember that our Top 20 results are based on the collective votes from forty seven radio pros representing thirty cities and eighteen companies. Yours truly (Jason Barrett) does not vote on the awards, I simply recruit the voters, collect their information, add up the votes, design the images, and present and promote the results.

We asked those participating to consider the criteria below to judge the best in the sports talk format, but keep in mind that each individual knows and values different things and that can have an influence on the final order. That makes this project an imperfect science. Nonetheless, it provides a collective snapshot of who radio folks consider to be the format’s best programmers.

  • Strong ratings in 2019
  • Great Reputation and influence
  • Makes a difference in its local community
  • Exceptional talent and content offered on a regular basis
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

Moving on to the rankings, the top spot has once again been claimed by 98.5 The Sports Hub. The Boston sports station has now won this award 4 out of the past 5 years, cementing itself as the format’s best brand. Rounding out the Top 5 were 670 The Score, Sports Radio 94 WIP, WFAN, and Sports Radio 1310/96.7 The Ticket.

We extend our congratulations to Rick Radzik, the 98.5 The Sports Hub staff, and former PD Mike Thomas on their well deserved honor, and now bring to you the full results of BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Sports Stations of 2019.

Additional Notes:

  • 98.5 The Sports Hub received the most 1st place votes, fourteen (14).
  • The battle for 3-4 saw WIP edge WFAN by 1 point, and the race for 16-17 was won by 104.3 The Fan over ESPN 1000 by 2 points.
  • Spots 21-25 belonged to 710 ESPN Seattle, Sports Radio 610, XTRA Sports 1360, WDAE, and Sports Radio 950 KJR.
  • 10 of the 37 eligible stations received at least one (1) 1st place vote.

Here is the remaining schedule for the BSM Top 20 of 2019.

BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Program Directors of 2019

0

The past four days have been spent shining the spotlight on the best local and national shows in the sports radio industry. Today, we give credit to those responsible for bringing you the programming you hear on a daily basis.

Before you scroll ahead to see who made the list, and grab screenshots of photos to share on social media, let me remind you that there was a lot of PD movement in 2019. That prevented some folks from appearing on the ballot. Both Mike Thomas and Rick Radzik of 98.5 The Sports Hub weren’t eligible due to Thomas leaving before the end of the year for ESPN 1000 and Radzik not having enough time in the seat. The same situation existed in Phoenix, Seattle, and Los Angeles where Rod Lakin, Kyle Brown, and Amanda Brown were elevated to PD roles late in the year. The exits of Eric Johnson in Philadelphia and Adam Delevitt in Chicago before the end of 2019 prevented them from being included as well.

This year’s Top 20 series voting committee featured forty seven radio professionals from thirty cities and eighteen companies. Yours truly (Jason Barrett) does not vote on the awards, I simply recruit the voters, collect their information, add up their votes, design the images, and present and promote the results.

  • Strong ratings in 2019
  • Industry track record
  • Reputation and influence
  • Must’ve programmed for at least one full book
  • Must have finished 2019 with the radio station
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

Moving on to the rankings, for the first time in five years, the Major Market PD category wasn’t won by Mark Chernoff or Mike Thomas. The votes this year went in favor of 670 The Score PD Mitch Rosen. Rounding out the Top 5 were Mark Chernoff of WFAN, Spike Eskin of Sports Radio 94 WIP, Jimmy Powers of 97.1 The Ticket, and Chris Kinard of 106.7 The Fan.

Under Rosen’s watch, The Score has continued to lead in Chicago, delivering strong ratings thanks to a weekday lineup which is well respected by industry executives. In 2018, Rosen added David Haugh to the morning show, a move that has helped the station continue making an impact in AM drive. Rosen followed that up in 2019 by moving Laurence Holmes into middays and Joe Ostrowski to nights, strengthening an already stacked lineup.

We extend our congratulations to Mitch on earning this year’s top honor, as well as every other programmer who gained a spot on this year’s list. With that being said, let’s now take a look at the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Sports Radio Program Directors of 2019”!

Additional Notes:

  • Mitch Rosen and Mark Chernoff tied for the most 1st place votes with eight (8).
  • The tightest race was for the 12-13 spots. Armen Williams held off Joe Zarbano by 2 points.
  • Spots 21-25 belonged to Len Weiner, Adam Klug, Scott McFarlane, AJ Hoffman, and Bryan Erickson.
  • 10 of the 28 programmers eligible for consideration this year received at least one (1) 1st place vote.

Here is the remaining schedule for the BSM Top 20 of 2019.

BSM’s Top 20 Mid Market Program Directors of 2019

The past four days have been spent shining the spotlight on the best local and national shows in the sports radio industry. Today, we give credit to those responsible for bringing you the programming you hear on a daily basis.

Before you scroll ahead to see who made the list, and grab screenshots of photos to share on social media, let me remind you that this year’s Top 20 series involved forty seven radio professionals from thirty cities and eighteen companies. Yours truly (Jason Barrett) does not vote on the awards, I simply recruit the voters, collect their information, add up their votes, design the images, and present and promote the results.

Secondly, we ask those participating to consider the criteria below to judge the best in the sports talk format. Keep in mind though that each individual knows and values different things and that can have an influence on the final order. That makes this project an imperfect science, something we could say about any list on any topic ever created. Nonetheless, it does provide a collective snapshot of what radio industry executives believe to be the format’s best programming minds.

  • Strong ratings in 2019
  • Industry track record
  • Reputation and influence
  • Must’ve programmed for at least one full book
  • Must have finished 2019 with the radio station
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

Moving on to the rankings, we have a new leader in this category for 2019. The votes this year went in favor of 92.9 ESPN PD Brad Carson. Rounding out the Top 5 were Andy Roth of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, Ryan Haney of WJOX in Birmingham, Jim Graci of 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, and Chuck Sapienza of 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore. Haney won the award last year, Roth the prior two years.

With Carson in charge, 92.9 ESPN has consistently produced strong results, even as talent changes have been necessary over the years. The brand has been nominated in the past for the Marconi Award for best sports station, and the majority of the station’s shows are well received by industry voters in our Top 20 series.

We extend our congratulations to Brad on a well deserved honor, as well as every other programmer who gained a spot on this year’s list. With that being said, let’s now take a look at the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Mid Market Sports Radio Program Directors of 2019”!

Additional Notes:

  • Brad Carson finished ahead of Andy Roth by 21 points. Carson and Roth were tied for 2nd in 1st place votes with three (2) apiece. Ryan Haney earned the most with four (4).
  • The closest races were for spots 4-5 and 20-21. Jim Graci edged Chuck Sapienza by 2 points, and Cade Voisin slipped by Buddy Wiley by 1 point.
  • 21-25 belonged to Buddy WileyErin HoganAndy Sweeney, Mike Thompson, and Justin Acri.
  • 11 of the 51 Program Directors eligible for consideration received at least 1st place vote.

We’re up to the fourth day of BSM’s Top 20 of 2019, placing the spotlight today on the sports talk format’s top afternoon shows. Before you jump ahead to see the results and grab screenshots of the photos to promote your favorite hosts and shows on social media, here are a few things to be aware of.

First, the voting for our Top 20 series this year involved forty seven radio professionals from thirty cities and eighteen companies. Yours truly (Jason Barrett) does not vote on the awards, I simply collect the information, add up the votes, design the images, and present and promote the results.

Secondly, our voters were asked to consider the criteria below to judge the format’s best programs. Keep in mind, each individual values different things and has deeper knowledge of some shows and cities than others. Though that may make this an imperfect science, we could say that about any list on any topic ever created. Therefore, we’re going to move forward and present a collective snapshot of what radio industry executives believe to be the format’s best shows.

  • Strong ratings in 2019
  • Industry track record
  • Reputation and influence
  • Ability to entertain and inform consistently
  • Must have finished 2019 with the network/station in the timeslot
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

That brings us to this year’s rankings for the Mid Market Local Sports Radio Afternoon Shows of 2019. Last year, Gary Parrish shot up the ladder to grab the top spot, but this year the honor is heading to Oklahoma City. 98.1 The Sports Animal’s afternoon king Jim Traber has been named the #1 Mid Market Local Sports Radio Afternoon Show for 2019.

Traber has been a fixture in the sports radio industry for over two decades following a career in Major League Baseball. He’s been a ratings and revenue producer for WWLS throughout his career, and his reputation and talent factored into him earning this year’s honor. Rounding out the Top 5 were Garry Parrish, Schopp & The Bulldog, The Fast Lane and Poni and Mueller.

BSM congratulates Jim, his supporting cast at WWLS, PD Chris Baker, and Cumulus SVP of Sports Bruce Gilbert on the well deserved recognition. Now let’s take a look at the final results of “BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Local Sports Radio Afternoon Shows of 2019!”

  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

That brings us to this year’s rankings for the Major Market Local Sports Radio Afternoon Shows of 2019. For the first time since we introduced the Top 20 series five years ago, the top honor goes to Felger and Massarotti of 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston. Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti have been consistently strong since arriving on the scene over a decade ago, often producing mid to high double digit ratings in one of the most competitive markets in the country. The Boston duo has come close to winning this category before, and now have finally gotten over the hump.

Last year’s winner, The Michael Kay Show, finished 2nd this time around. Rounding out the rest of the Top 5 were Mike Valenti, Waddle & Silvy and Mike Missanelli. Despite spending significant time in afternoons in 2019, Mike Francesa, Jorge Sedano and Ben & Skin were not eligible for votes due to not finishing the year in the afternoon drive slot at their respective stations.

BSM congratulates Mike, Tony, Jim Murray, James Stewart, Rick Radzik and the 98.5 The Sports Hub team, as well as former PD Mike Thomas on the show picking up this year’s top honor. BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Local Sports Radio Midday Shows of 2019

Day three of our BSM Top 20 of 2019 has arrived, and today we turn our focus to the sports format’s best midday shows. Before scrolling down the page to see the results and save the photos to promote your favorite hosts and programs on social media, here are a few things to be aware of.

Keep in mind that each individual values things differently and has deeper knowledge of some shows and cities than others. Though that may make this an imperfect science, we could say that about any list on any topic ever created. Therefore, we’re going to move forward and present a collective snapshot of what radio industry executives believe to be the format’s best shows.

  • Reputation and influence
  • Finished 2019 with the network/station
  • Ability to entertain and inform consistently
  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

That brings us to this year’s rankings for the Major Market Local Sports Radio Midday Shows of 2019. Mason & Ireland won this award last year and in 2016, but the popular duo moved up to afternoon drive in 2019, opening the door for a new winner. The show that took home the honor this year is WFAN’s Joe & Evan.

Benigno and Roberts won’t win this award next year because they too have moved to afternoon drive. That step was taken officially in January 2020, but for 2019 they were entrenched in the big apple in the midday slot and produced a strong year’s worth of results to earn the respect and attention of our voters. The New York tandem defeated 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak & Bertrand by twenty nine (29) points, although the two shows tied for the most 1st place votes with nine (9).

BSM congratulates Joe, Evan, Mark Chernoff and the entire WFAN team, as well as every other show that appeared on this year’s Midday shows list. Now without further adieu, let’s take a look at the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Local Sports Radio Midday Shows of 2019!”

Dan Dakich of 93.5/107.5 The Fan in Indianapolis has taken the top honor once again, holding off Nashville’s Midday 180 from 104.5 The Zone.

Dakich won the award last year by 22 points. This year, he increased his lead, taking home the top spot by 41 points, thanks to the most 1st place votes (9) and appearing in the Top 3 on more ballots than any other show in the category.

First, the voting for our Top 20 series this year involved forty seven radio professionals from thirty cities and eighteen companies. Yours truly (Jason Barrett) does not vote on the awards, I simply collect the information, add up the votes, design the images, and present and promote the results.

Secondly, our voters are asked to consider the criteria below to judge the format’s best programs. However, each contributor values certain things more than others. Due to that fact, we understand this is an imperfect science. Nonetheless, the Top 20 series offers a collective snapshot of what radio industry executives consider to be the format’s best shows.

  • Strong ratings in 2019
  • Industry track record
  • Reputation and influence
  • Finished 2019 with the network/station
  • Ability to entertain and inform consistently

Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti have consistently produced great entertainment and strong ratings for WFAN, rebuilding the station’s image in mornings following the highly publicized arrest of Craig Carton. This is Giannotti’s first time atop the morning show charts. Boomer last won the category in 2016 while paired with Carton.

BSM congratulates Gregg, Boomer, Al Dukes, Eddie Scozzare, Mark Chernoff and the entire WFAN crew on earning this year’s top spot. Now without further delay, here are the full results of “BSM’s Top 20 Major Market Local Sports Radio Morning Shows of 2019!”

BSM’s Top 20 National Sports Talk Shows of 2019

6

The BSM Top 20 of 2019 has arrived. This is our fifth year of recognizing the best in sports radio by involving industry professionals. We’ve started each of the past four years by showcasing the top local morning, midday, and afternoon shows during the first three days of the series, saving national shows for day four. This year though we’ve decided to change it up and kick things off with the national shows before turning our attention to the local categories for the next five days.

Before you scroll down to look at the results and save the photos to promote your favorite show on social media, there are a few things I want you to be aware of. First, the voting for our Top 20 series involved forty seven radio professionals from thirty cities and eighteen companies.

  • Points are given for each spot (EX: 20 for 1st, 1 for 20th)

That now brings us to the rankings for National Sports Talk Show of 2019.
